A quest for safer makeup and body care
I've always leaned more toward granola than Froot Loops, but becoming a mom caused me to think even more about what products we use and foods we consume (not that I can't still polish off a pound of Strawberry Twizzlers in an evening!).
I began checking out our personal care products through the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Cosmetic Safety Database and Sunscreen Guide and was surprised to find that some of the "natural" products I had been buying contained harmful chemicals.
Listed below are products my son and I are currently using (My husband is not on this bandwagon. Yet.) followed by their EWG rating (0 being low concern and 10 being high) and where I buy them. Some are among the safest available, and some are compromise choices, combining relative safety and cost-effectiveness. The safest course of action, naturally (hah hah), is to reduce the number of products one uses.
Nothing's perfect, as Grandma says, but at least this is a starting point. For more information on EWG's methodology and how it arrives at its ratings, check out its "About" page.
And feel free to post your favorite "safe" product suggestions at the bottom!
